Nokdu Flower

"Everyone is Precious" - Yi Kyang

Nokdu Flower is a historical drama that is set during the 1894 Donghak Peasant Revolution. This drama is another tale about two brothers siding on different oppositions that ended in a conflict at the end. (This blog may have lingering spoilers along the way)
Yi Kyang (Jo Jung Suk) the older brother was an illegitimate child whose know as "That Man" a brutal and rough man while Yi Hyun (Yoon SHi Yoon) the younger one was respected and love by everyone. He loves his older brother so much that he admires and respects him.

I really wish that this drama was about two brothers fighting for their country as one, not from two opposite sides. The growth of these characters were deliberately opposite. They don't even had much screentime together because of the different paths they have taken.

Baek Yi Kyang improved his character so much. From the arrogant, scary, brutal THAT MAN he was, to a character that gave meaning of never lose hope. We will continue to fight for the future of our people. This is the third time I have watched Jo Jung Suk, I saw him at Legend of the Blue Sea and watched him on EXIT, I felt like this was very new to me. Watching him really made me feel he was Yi Kyang, he's words during the Battle of UGeumchi made an impact "That's why I am going to fight, for the past few months, we have lived in a world where all humans are equal. It has been so amazing that I cannot imagine living in any other world"

Baek Yi Hyun's character was a distressed to the heart. (I felt like I was bias here) Despite of hating his progression, I felt sad for his character. Yes I never liked how cruel from within he was but I felt like because of his status he felt that he was never accepted at all. It all started from his love for Myung Sim and how his brother Lord Hwang destroys him. (I guess love is a powerful thing, you'll never what you can do to be with the one you love. whether you'll go bad or good)

Yoon Shi Yoon had really showed the turmoil that Baek Yi Hyun is suffering. From his PSTDs, his struggles with his own morals, the likes of changing the world, and his own personal choices. I was always wanting seeing him in a serious character but I didn't expect him to be this SERIOUSS!!!! and to add up he's like a villain!

This is also a result of poor parenting from the Father :((((((( He gave unsolicited advices to make his children suffer. It was all power and rising up, he never cared for what he's children might suffer. :(

We also have Han Ye Rin who plays Song Ja In, a merchant and a daughter of the chief merchant. At first she was all about earning money and aiming for huge profits but later on she provided support on the Donghak Warriors. I love how Yi kyang and Ja In had their little sweet romances, it's like love in the time of war. Despite of the few instances they are together, you know from the very beginning Ja In Likes YI Kyang. As her journey being a merchant takes her, she even met Yi Hyun as the sweet, young man who turns into an Oni along the way.

"It was always the weak that changes the world" -Jeon Jung Bu

Jeon Jung Bu is the base of this drama. Actor Moo Seo Choi was Jeon Jun Bu. It felt like he was really leading the revolution. I always remember him as Park Bogum's Dad in Reply 1988 but this time his General Nokdu to me.

It was his revolution that made the Gabo Reform into a reality. He was the general of the peasants. He was the father of his people. He had stand clear with his aims on equality among all status. His ways may not be good for starting a rebellion but his men we're the warriors who fought over the Japanese during the Ugeumchi War. Despite of losing the battle, his name was never forgotten. He was The Nokdu Flower.
(They also re-enact this famour photo of General Nokdu)

Roh Haeng Ha is one of the badass female character in this drama! In a league of extraordinary fighters, there's her. She's strong, she's feisty, and genuine. Despite of her strong aura and physique at the end of the day, she's a woman, she suddenly feels attraction to our main lead Yikyang and also gets attracted to pretty jewelry :)

The story was base on the real historical events during the Donghak Peasants war (1894-1895) and the life of Donghak Leader Jeon Jung Bu or was better known as General Nokdu (of course with fictional happenings added to the drama).

I love historical dramas because it indulge to me to a great understanding of history. I just wish we also have this kind of dramas here in the Philippines. This drama made me cry so much especially the episode of the revolution itself and the moment when Song Ja In saw the death of her family friend Choi Deok Ki. :(((((

The latter part of the series was the Ugeumchi war. It was hard to watch due to thousands of people being slaughtered by the Japanese. It even made me cry harder because of the song Seya Seya ParangSaeya... I even searched for the song itself to know it's meaning. The song was actually the song from the revolution itself.  "In the lyrics, “Nokdu (Mung bean) field” means the Korean peninsula ruled by his humanitarian ideals about equal society, and the “blue bird” stands for Japanese and Chinese military forces that suppressed the revolution and killed thousands of Koreans at that time." - wikipedia

[Korean Lyrics]
새야 새야 파랑새야
녹두밭에 앉지 마라
녹두꽃이 떨어지면
청포장수 울고 간다

[English Translation]
Bird, bird, blue bird
Do not sit on the Nokdu (mung bean) field
If the Nokdu flower drop off
Nokdu jelly seller will cry out

This drama has a lot of familiar faces (if your a kdrama fan you know what I mean. I always see this actors in historical dramas as well).

"The only way to overcome fear is by confronting it" Jeon Jung Bu

This drama is inspiring to watch because on how the Joseon People never back down in fighting for their country. If you like Historical dramas like me, this series is for you!

Thank you for dropping by! I hope your dreams come true! Stay Safe!
